Your Romantic, Low-Key Escape to Carmel-by-the-Sea: A Fall & Winter Itinerary

I love escaping to Carmel-by-the-Sea for a romantic, low-key coastal getaway. This itinerary was recommended to us by family when we needed a quiet place to unwind, and it has quickly become our go-to. Since we’re now under 100 days until Christmas, I thought it was the perfect time to share our favorite spots and things to do in this charming little town. We love going during fall and winter when the crowds are fewer, making it an even more relaxing experience. All of the recommendations here are within walking distance, designed to make your stay stress-free and enjoyable.

Our Go-To Itinerary

Stay:
We love staying at Coachman’s Inn in downtown Carmel. It’s ideally located, allowing you to easily explore the local shops, stroll to the main beach, and enjoy the nearby restaurants.

Breakfast:

  • Carmel Bakery – A classic stop for fresh pastries and coffee. Their croissants and breakfast sandwiches make for a quick and delicious start to your day.
  • Katy’s Place (Cash Only) – A cozy, no-frills diner serving hearty portions. The atmosphere is friendly, but don’t forget to bring cash, as they don’t accept cards.
  • The Cottage – A quaint breakfast spot with a diverse menu. Whether you’re craving a hearty omelet or fluffy pancakes, dining outdoors here lets you soak in Carmel’s charm.

Lunch:

  • Forge in the Forest – This spot is perfect for a casual lunch, and the dog-friendly patio is a bonus. Their award-winning French onion soup is a personal favorite, and the laid-back vibe makes it a great place to recharge.

Dinner:

  • Dametra Café – For a lively, Mediterranean-inspired dinner, Dametra Café offers flavorful dishes like savory lamb kebabs and creamy pasta. On certain nights, you’ll also get to enjoy live music, adding a fun element to your dining experience.

Afternoon Stroll:
Take a peaceful walk down to Carmel Beach and unwind by the ocean. A stroll along Scenic Road offers stunning views and is ideal for post-lunch or pre-dinner relaxation.

Farmers Market:
If you’re in town on a Thursday, make your way to Devendorf Park for the Carmel Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s the perfect opportunity to browse fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local delicacies, all while chatting with friendly vendors.

Coffee Break:
Stop by Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Co. for an afternoon pick-me-up. Their outdoor seating is great for people-watching and taking in the charming downtown scene.

Sweet Treats:

  • Lafayette Bakery & Café – Indulge in delectable French pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth.
  • Carmel Valley Chocolate – For those craving something richer, their artisanal chocolates are sure to hit the spot.

Dog Lovers’ Stop:
Don’t miss The Carmel Dog Shop! It’s a must-visit for dog owners, offering a wide selection of treats, toys, and accessories. It’s also the perfect spot to grab a little gift for your furry friend to bring home.
